Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship

Under the Auspices of the ADC-Michigan Education & Resource Center

Past ::
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee’s (ADC) Michigan Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program began about seven years ago through the vision of a few ADC members who felt that ADC ought to implement a program that would, not only honor our nation’s greatest civil right’s leader, but also carry his message to the Arab and Chaldean American communities in Metro Detroit, who face so many of the same struggles that African Americans have seen.  Thus, the scholarship program was born.  Through the guidance and efforts of educators and students, ADC embarked on an uncharted journey to further unite the Arab American and African American communities in Metro Detroit in the name of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Present ::

Through this program, Arab and Chaldean American high school seniors are asked to write an essay about what the message of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. means to them as Arab/Chaldean Americans.  A panel of educators from area schools then judges the student essays.  Depending on the funding made available from various corporate and community sponsors, the judges select a specific number of students to receive scholarships.  These students are then honored at a community reception set around Dr. King’s birthday.  Attendance at this reception is by invitation only and usually is of a very diverse nature.  All keynote speakers in the past have been prominent members of the African American Community.

The wonder of this program is in it dual goals to provide Arab American and Chaldean high school students with college funding and to help educate them about the ongoing struggle for civil rights.  In the Program’s short span, it has grown to reach out to students in over 50 area high schools and has attracted prominent members from both the Arab American and African American communities.  To date, ADC through the help of many generous sponsors, has been able to give out thousands of dollars in scholarships.

Future ::
As the only program in Michigan that works to unite two of Metro Detroit’s largest communities, ADC hopes to continue to expand the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Program in more ways than one.  It is our belief that this program will continue to attract more members of both communities and reflect on the program’s scope and influence.  It is also our hope to continue to host very prominent keynote speakers from the African American community who can help bring the message of unity and equality home for the audience.  Since September 11, this message has become more and more important to all Americans.  As we continue to work to get this message across, ADC maintains, as Dr. King once did that “Injustice anywhere, is a threat to justice everywhere.”
